Trees Trees Trees!

February 24, 2010

Few days ago several trees behind my house which were over 50 years old were cut down.

I remember bats, crows, lizards, squirrels, insects, and may be even more creatures lived in those trees. Apart from these losing their homes, residents around those trees, including me, will experience a warmer summer. No no, not climate change! There just won’t be any shade from the sun. Plus there will be more dust and the disturbing traffic noise.

It’s worth noting, realizing and appreciating the decision made by UGC and other organizations to make the study of ecology and environmental issues mandatory for all undergraduate courses in Indian universities. In view of the recent events in my neighbourhood, it’s fair to demand the government to take some action to make property owners aware of the value and need of trees and things of such nature.

However careful we might be, inefficiencies creep in, and they must be addressed.
